Audi will discontinue production of the multitronic CVT

Audi will discontinue the production of its multitronic CVT transmission. It won't be offered on Audi's next-gen models.

Audi's senior driving behavior engineer Ralph Riegger said development of the multitronic CVT has ended and it will not be offered on next generation models. A large part of the reason for that could be the class action lawsuit involving 2002-2006MY A4 and A6 models which was settled in 2013. The CVT will be available in the A5 and the A7, but their successors won't get it.

The transmission that will be used in the future is a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) and it is believed the first model of this kind will be the all-new A4, which is set to go on sale in the first half of 2015.

thankfully they're going with a dct and getting rid of the CVT, at least not only will this save their asses, it should help with making their cars more enjoyable.

It's a matter of opinion, but I am not sad that they are switching to DCT. I think that the reason why they are changing it is because people like the feel of the DCT better than the CVT. People just haven't been taking to CVT very well at all.

Its not DSG BTW.

DSG is a true dual clutch manual. Audi will be using the S-tronic dual-clutch automatic and will be trying to replace their 8 speed auto with it.

lets just say this for those who never fully understood how cvts work of course they cant appreciate the feel. the current generation of vehicles with cvts have been shunned due to false issue reports. "hello audi support, my transmission is slipping and making noises. something bad is happening the gears are not switching properly. well it feells that way."

and yes it is a matter of opinion. not bashing cvts but personally i would go with the dsg. ive driven the mk6 golf with a direct shift gearbox and it drives well.

They are the same : Dual Clutch, Direct Shift - same kind of box - just VAG and BMW-speak different. They are BOTH dual clutch computer-controlled manual gearboxes. VAG (Audi) uses the foot-off-brake to engage the first clutch while BMW uses foot-on-throttle to do the same. So one (VAG) acts more like an automatic (torque-convertor) and the other will roll (or not) with foot off the brake (and NOT on the gas) like a manual...

S-tronic is a DSG (Direkt Schalt Getriebe) - it has two clutches, and VAG was first to production with it. BMW's earlier SSG (Sequentielle Schalt Getriebe, anglacized to SMG - Sequentielle Manuelle Getriebe - later changed to Sequentiellen M Getriebe) was a single clutch unit (ala R-tronic) but everybody has now decided that 2 clutches are the way to go - especially for launch control. BMW just called theirs a DCT instead of a DSG - semantics and a few hydraulic and control differences - BOTH dual clutch computer-controlled manual gearboxes.
