Audi showed off a prototype of its new Audi Smart Display tablet at the recent Consumer Electronics Show. The project is a collaboration with tech-giant Google, and will provide consumers with a wealth of new options for networking between the car, its driver and the Internet.

Drivers and passengers will be able to connect "seamlessly with the car and enrich it with the state-of-the-art computing and graphics power of its Nvidia Tegra 40 processor." This connection will be done "through a secure and stable WLAN interface, and via the very familiar Android operating system."

The tablet should allow you to do things such as watch movies, listen to audio books and music, video chat via Skype, and control the radio, media and navigation system too.

No idea what the Audi Smart Display tablet will end up costing, but it seems to be a step in the right direction.

It's a good move, I would rather have an APP i can download even if it's a super large file, but maybe the whole thing was so complex they couldn't do that? Now they just need to release some informative video on it to get people more familiar.

I think this is just a step away from having full android integration in the infotainment system. Its going to get very interesting because apple is courting automakers and so is android. Its just going to be unfortunate because eventually you're going to have to choose which OS in the car you want before you even begin to narrow brands down....

That is true.
I remember reading an article on Apple making some big deals with automakers to integrate it's iOS into cars.
Just a matter of time till it becomes something even bigger and better.

I actually think companies like Apple should develop the infotainment systems in cars.
