Automatically Fold Mirror Upon Locking with Remote or
With HOLD for 4 seconds on Door Sensor :

You MUST code BOTH door controllers or only ONE mirror will fold -

[42 - Door Elect. Driver]
[Coding - 07] -> [Long Coding Helper] -> [Byte 4]
[Bit 6 - Undocumented (1 = active) in Binary String]
=> Change Bit 6 to 1
Note : Bit 0 is at the far right of the binary string
The old HEX value for this byte was prolly 1C; Binary Value [00011100]
and the NEW HEX value should be typed in as 5C; Binary Value [01011100]

Esc or Exit
Transfer Coding
Do It!

[52 - Door Elect. Pass.]
[Coding - 07] -> [Long Coding Helper] -> [Byte 4]

Probably a very stupid question:

If you don't have folding mirrors in the first place (ie I have the Progressiv model in Canada, equivalent to the Premium Plus in the US), will this coding mod activate them. In other words, do the mechanisms exist in both trim levels but are just not not "activated" in teh lower trim level? Are there other "mechanisms" that recodign will "activate" ie drive select or tire pressure monitoring etc?
Yes. The mechanism is there. You just need to activate it.

IDK about driver select, but tire monitoring pressure should be there as well, you may need to add the sensor at the tires

I'm not as certain as the other answer that the hardware is there - I know for example on other Audis, that is NOT true ... In the US, folding mirrors are standard on every Q3, so we have the hardware - I'll check the PR codes of a Canadian car to see -

Followup :: It looks like from the PR codes that the manufacturing part for a Canadian Car that I have a VIN for DOES have the same mirrors as my car - which fold. But from the rest of that car's equipment, it looks like a Prestige level car. To be sure if you like, send me a PM with your VIN and I'll check it ...

Drive Select (on a Q3) is mostly code-driven, but there is a dash-mounted switch to select the mode -I'm not sure this can be completely done within MMI - but is on other cars ...

TPMS is via ABS sensors on the Q3 NOT in-wheel transmitters ... so I think it can be coded - CoCoPops has done this mod I believe - look around some of his posts -

Interesting....

Is there a method to verify if my Q3 is equipped with the hardware inside the mirrors?

Also, (sorry I'm a little behind on keeping up on all threads here) it looks like you're accessing the programming menu with nothing but your fingers and courage? I mean, no hardware is needed?

As noted above - you must first use VCDS (which is both hardware and software thru your OBDII port) to allow the green menu to be accessed with fingers and courage.

As for the mirrors, send me your VIN and an external email, and I'll send you a CatData and PR Codes for your car which may lead you to know if you have the hardware already ... I will add that from the two Canadian Q3s that I have VINs for, one a Premium Plus (Progressive) and one a Prestige, both seem to have the hardware for folding mirrors, although the Premium Plus did not appear to be coded for them. Again, to code them requires VCDS and an R-T cable NOT merely poking around the green menu...

Note hardware is NOT likely there ... sorry.

First off... Many thanks to Roger, I sent him a private message along with my VIN number and he quickly responded back with a CatData & PR Codes like he said. He also mentioned this:

On my ePR code list I could see my two mirrors, (5SG & 5RW) which are the same as folding mirrors. So far, that's a good sign at the possibility of the hardware (actuators, motors, etc.) being already inside the mirror housing. However, the coding for the "Exterior mirror setting" is set to "6XD" which is NOT the setting for folding mirrors, which is "6XK"....

So, what's next for me?

Roger provided me with very good info on the software side of the house, unfortunately I do not have the software and hardware to give it a try and see if it works by adjusting the settings as he mentioned. I looked around and it looks like I found a site where you can download the software for free and the cable I also found online from $10 to $60. I still need to do a little more research as to which one I need exactly. But, for the time being, I am curios to see how the inside of my mirror looks like, I will try to open it up sometime later today. If the hardware is there, it should be obvious to see. I'm expecting to see a linear actuator or a motor, I don't know; that's just my guess.

Anyway, I'd like to make sure that the parts are in place before I decide to download the software & purchase the cable. I figured, I would need to wait a couple of days for the cable to get here so I'll give it a try by visual inspection first since it's faster.

So, more to come!

Software can be downloaded from the ross-tech site. However it only Works with the original ross-tech cable. The cheaper cable you can get from them that works on the Q3 is the micro-CAN cable. It cost $250.00. If you purchase an ebay cable, Ross-tech software won't work, only a lite version which won't allow to do any programming.

Thanks Juan -

...as he pointed out and in my sticky on this subject, PLEASE use ONLY Ross-Tech cables with VCDS. There ARE many counterfeits/replicas available on ebay etc. BUT you really take a risk with your car to save $100-$200. If you're that desperate - take a look around some other Audi sites (Audizine, Quattroworld, etc) and find someone with a genuine cable who'd be more than happy to help you with some coding - for maybe a few beers and a pizza afterwards. If you're near me (Greenville, SC) just PM me and we can set something up - I'd really rather help you with my genuine R-T cables than you limp back to Audi with a no-warranty claim of a cheap counterfeit cable that messed up your nice Audi...

Good info guys, thanks!
It looks like there's no further research to be done on my part now. All I would need now is to cough up those $250 or get someone with the genuine equipment. I'm not willing to take that risk on my car to be honest. Thanks for the offer Roger, but I think I'll take a pass on it since we're 1200 miles away :eek:
Maybe I can talk to some of the Audi mechanics on my next service appointment, I'm sure they would like some beers.
Aww c'mon, 1200 miles is a nice road trip, and it's 80 and sunny here ...and the Tail of the Dragon is only 70 miles away - make it for Quattro de Mayo (http://www.quattrodemayo.com - I'm the guy in the top most right side of the main pic) and you'll have a real blast -

We also have decent pizza and beer >:D

I would have thought if you cannot fold them manually then the associated motors and wiring will be absent, I cannot see Audi wasting Euros on installing (relatively) expensive hardware that will never be used.

As an aside, over there in the freezy cold States have you come across many Q3s or other Audis that have damaged the folding mirror mechanism due to them freezing up?

It seems to be of concern over here when people do the "auto fold" mod.
Thanks for the feedback!
I decided to pop the mirror off to take a peak, and I confirmed what you just said. The hardware is NOT there, although I have no idea of how it looks like but you can tell by visual inspection that there's no hardware present that would show some sort of mechanism to pivot in order to fold automatically, the biggest give-away was the big spring used to fold back and forth.. I took some pics, I should've taken a closer one of the spring in the back. Now I'm just curios to see if someone else takes a pic of the inside of their folding mirrors :nerd:

Anyway, here are some pics just in case it helps anyone.

Thanks for the verification ...!
So, does this mean my Premium Plus Q3 will not be able to fold automatically even with coding?

Do I need to fold mirrors by hand after parking?

My vin is WA1BFCFS9FR010770
yes, premium plus mirrors doesn't have a motor.
Juan is CORRECT -

Ok, who is in the Midwest that wants to code this for me?? I really want these mirrors to function like this - locking and unlocking. I can offer a generous payment:laugh:
