I was going to focus on just the interior instrument lighting, but now I feel like enumerating my petty grievances... they're all sort of in the interior since they are all trivial human factors issues. To bad the Audi doesn't come with an SDK so I can rewrite all the offensive bits of logic.

1. The headlight and MMI options don't give me one-press control of lighting levels. Why can't I turn the knob from "off, and I really mean off" to "DRLs" to "headlights" with a quick twist? The MMI let's me disable DRLs but not instantly by turning a knob. I don't need assistance to know when it is dark outside, particularly when the assistance is so confused.

2. Audi always makes it impossible to activate cabin air recirculation without air-conditioning. I'm really quite capable of deciding for myself whether I need to dehumidify the cabin and whether I am passing or following something stinky. Will the Q3 be as bad as my old A4, so that when it is really cold, the air-conditioning refuses to run and therefore recirculation is verboten? Only time will tell, as we're probably above freezing for the next 8 months.

3. Maybe I'm just fighting the Tao of automatic transmissions, but why can't I move from "S" to tiptronic without first going into "D"? "S" won't maintain enough engine braking in hilly country so the first thing I have to do is let "D" upshift to an even worse gear before I can intervene manually?

4. Audi decided to dim the instrument lighting to 'remind' me to switch on head lights. Because they've made the light sensor far too paranoid about when head lights are appropriate, the result is that the dash goes dark every time I enter a parking garage and would like to find that parking assist button, which is now disappearing into the shadows like a ninja thanks to the overhanging dash and black everything interior design. (How much more black could it be? That's right: none more black.)

5. Maybe I've missed something obvious, but is there a quick button sequence to blank the MMI screen when I'm tired of seeing it, without turning off the music that is playing? The DIS display is usually enough, and it seems like you ought to be able to make the main screen go dark and quickly reactivate if you actually use the center console MMI controls rather than the steering wheel controls...

You can blame the DOT (NOT Audi) for not having a quick way to turn off the DRLs as they are NOT related to any lighting conditions nor even/especially YOUR ability to see. They are intended for OTHERS to see you - hence the term Daytime Running Lights. The DOT has mandated that they be on when they are, and make it a consciously legal choice to turn them off. This requirement is not shared by all countries, but for us in the US is particular.

Cabin recirc will turn on the AC mode, but it (recirc) will still work when outside ambient air temps are low, and you will still get some dehumidification ...

Yeah, continue to fight Tao on the shifter, or rather more probably Porsche, it's really Ferdinand's fault, that's just the way it is ;-)

You can adjust the sensitivity of the light sensor in MMI, but it sounds like you might have to fight Tao (this one is really quite likely Tao for sure) some more, oh well. Yup, black it is - buttons have a shadow over them - BUT you knew THIS. It was black before you even bought the car - you KNEW, no whining about it now >:D

Well, you could opt for manually just folding down the MMI screen, as the RoW gets to choose - but the DOT stepped in here too. Regardless, a few of us have retrofitted this for about $100 and enjoy a less cluttered normal driving view to boot...

Good to know about the A/C.

Where can you adjust sensitivity in MMI? Is this one of those green menu things mentioned on the board? I looked in the red "Car" menu and even the MMI settings menus and didn't see anything that looks like sensitivity. Just stuff like the pitch and volume for the parking assist tones, as well as interior lighting which seemed to adjust the ambient lights in the door pockets, cup holders, etc.

You're right - not on the Q3. I think it begins with the A4 that you can find the Auto Headlight sensitivity (3-4 levels) - sorry...
