I have a 2015 Q3 Prestige. Over the past several days the entire MMI system shuts down randomly and then after several minutes restarts (or reboots). During the shutdown the MMI screen is blank, there are no backlights or LED's lit on the MMI control panel and the control panel directly below it (drive mode, parking sensor controls, etc.). No information is passed from the MMI to the in-dash display between the Speedo and Tach. (Portions of the display go blank.)

There has been no pattern to the failures or obvious triggers. The system just shuts down and restarts after several minutes.

Additional info: I had the MMI console replaced in April of this year under warranty for a different problem (fit and finish flaw).

One thought: The weather is colder here now (below freezing) and I'm wondering if there might be a problem with a loose electrical connection as a result of the repair.

Has anyone else here experience the problem or know if there is an existing service bulletin for the problem? Thanks!

I would guess the same as you - have the Audi Service guys check their connections ...

My other beater xtrail has one of those flakey connection issues, the radio gets a bad antenna connection as soon as winter comes.

UPDATE: Took the car into the dealer today. They said that they had to order a Software or Firmware update from the factory and that I need to come back next week to have the update applied. They weren't specific on whether it was software or firmware. I'll press them harder next week for some specifics on the update applied and let you all know the outcome.

Update: After 3 additional visits to the dealer to diagnose the problem the verdict is that the problem was most likely a bad hard drive in the MMI control console. I was able to isolate the problem after playing around with the unit during done of the shutdown/reboot episodes. At first I thought it was a problem with my iPhone syncing with the car via Bluetooth after updating my phone to iOS 10.2. That initial theory proved to be false after I unpaired my phone from the car for a couple of days. I then found that the unit would freeze during the "Media Initializing" step at startup even though I had no removable media (XD Card) in the MMI or had the phone connected via Bluetooth or hardwire. Additionally the navigation system would not initialize during this time. Eventually the system would time out, shutdown and reboot.

I did learn from the dealer during this process that there have been some reported pairing issues with the MMI with phones that contain certain special characters in the Contacts or Phone Book entries. They ruled this problem out after I let them keep my phone for the day and try a bunch of different things to replicate the issue. They were able to pair my phone with a couple of other cars at the dealership without problems.

The dealer at first tried updating the MMI Software, performing hard resets, etc. before finally agreeing with me that it was likely a HDD problem and received permission from Audi to replace the MMI control console.

I'm now on my 2nd replacement MMI control console. Fingers crossed!

Morning, sorry to jump in on this thread but I’ve been having similar things happen to my mmi very randomly but I only really use my car at weekends as I’m always away.
I get it where it shuts down and testers and nothing in the screen with nothing working.

What’s your new software version this is what I currently have!

If someone could tell me what to do as my car is in with audi on Tuesday so I can get them on the case, I’ve just mentioned to them it maybe a software update needed tho.

Many thanks

After replacing the main control unit in the dash three times, the problem was isolated to an electronic problem in the display situated on top of the dash. Once that was replaced I have not had a problem since.
